Morning Announcements

Mornings are anchored by homeroom at Immaculate Conception Middle School. Students may arrive at school as early as 7:30 a.m. to visit lockers or socialize with friends but must be present in homeroom by 8:00 a.m. and ready for the day. Students watch the Morning Announcements video broadcast daily, as the ICS in the Morning team of middle school student share reminders about upcoming events, recaps and photos of recent events or celebrations, and highlights of birthdays, fun facts and special messages. The Pledge of Allegiance is led by an ICS homeroom and our morning hosts lead our entire school community in praying The Hail Mary and reciting our school motto: “Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Kind…. Because Christ Matters.

There are three homerooms in each middle school grade. Homerooms build a sense of community in small but real ways as they study, joke, make plans, and catch up each morning.

8:10 a.m. to 2:50 p.m.

Department Overview: The Mathematics Department seeks to empower ICS students with the confidence to ask questions, define problems, evaluate information and analyze and interpret data, all while mastering the foundational mathematics skills needed to purse higher level of study in high school and beyond.  Our curriculum is spiraled, meaning that students continue to practice and further develop concept areas throughout the entire school year, rather than exploring specific topics for a limited time and then moving forward without continuing to apply them. Homework is assigned nightly and both homework and assessments are cumulative. Extensive problem solving and the required reading comprehension skills are a pivotal element of our math program’s success. Calculator use is limited to graphing applications in higher level courses enabling students to internalize basic computational skills and remain proficient in them.

English / Language Arts

Department Overview: Middle school students are segmented into four or five sections for ELA instruction allowing for smaller classes conducive to an interactive and discussion-oriented classroom experience. Our ELA program focuses on the following standards: reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, writing and oral language. Within each grade level students work with a variety of fictional and nonfictional texts and genres, including multiple novels each year. Advanced language arts classes are faster-paced, utilize texts beyond current grade level, and require a higher level of self-motivation and independence from the students. We also offer small group ELA instruction with a reading specialist for those students who would benefit from that extra support. ICS middle school students learn the steps of the writing process as they become focused and coherent writers, aware of audience and purpose.

Social Studies

Department Overview: Course content promotes student connections between past events and current circumstances while exploring the human behavior that drives or results from historical events. Accessing primary sources is emphasized and classes maintain a heavy focus on writing for analysis. Multimedia presentation of content is routine and project-based assessments and hands-on activities inspire student learning. National History Day (currently suspended due to Covid 19) is a curriculum component in the 7th and 8th grades, requiring students to do research, develop and prove a thesis, evaluate primary and secondary sources, and prepare an annotated bibliography.

Department Overview: ICS Middle School Students all study Spanish and meet three times weekly to explore the four key areas of foreign language study: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Focus in these middle school Spanish courses ranges from grammar and vocabulary, to reading and listening comprehension strategies, to speaking and writing activities, and to cultural exploration and presentations. Students most often leave ICS with a competency level in Spanish allowing them to pursue a more advanced course of study in high school.

Department Overview: Through the prescribed religion curriculum standards of the Archdiocese of Baltimore and the religious traditions of the Catholic faith, our students leave ICS prepared to bear witness to their faith; eager to continue their pursuit of truth and justice; and desiring to serve those in need. Religion classes in the ICS Middle School are alive with prayer and discussion as students share perspectives on their personal faith and social justice issues appropriate for their developmental stage.

Extracurricular Activities

ICS offers a broad range of extracurricular options and middle school students are highly encouraged to get involved! Some clubs and teams meet after school, while others may meet before school or during the lunch/recess period. Eagle athletic teams compete on weekends as well! Extracurricular activities offer a great opportunity for students to pursue a passion, try something new, make friends, and step into leadership roles. Here at ICS, our middle school students ARE the school leaders and extracurriculars are a great way to gain confidence and have fun!
